The School of Engineering (SOE) had a humble beginning in 1978 with a few post graduate and Ph.D. programs in Engineering. Now, with over 3000 students, it has assumed a formidable size as the largest academic unit of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), a State Govt. University accredited by NAAC with A+ Grade in October 2022. In 1995, the School started B.Tech programs in four conventional disciplines, such as, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, and a novel UG programme, Information Technology, for the first time in India. In 1996, yet another novel UG programme, B.Tech in Safety and Fire Engineering, was introduced for the first time in the world. B.Tech program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering was added in 2003. Currently, the nine Departments of the School offer 10 UG programmes, 11 PG programmes and PhD in most of the engineering disciplines serving all the stake-holders in the best way possible. The School has executed projects worth more than Rupees 250 lakhs through its research and consultancy activities. The School received Rs. 17 core under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) in Phase-II and Phase-III and modernized its research and other infrastructures.
Engineering education is undergoing profound and unprecedented changes at a rapid pace. To ensure world-wide acceptance of our degrees, the seven full-time programs were got accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2015-16 under tier-I and, thereafter, four of them got reaccredited for 3 more years. The process is now on to get all the BTech and MTech programmes accredited from 2022 onwards. The School has an active Institution Innovation Council (IIC) under the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India. Along with quality education, the School, by itself or jointly with other Departments of the university, promotes innovation, entrepreneurship, sports, games, yoga, cultural activities and so on. There are enough highly qualified and experienced faculty members willing to guide students in all kinds of endeavours. Grievance Redressal Cell, Anti-Ragging Committee, Anti-Narcotic Club etc. function proactively to ensure a safe and free academic environment. The School has an exclusively compounded premises of 15 acres with exclusive library and canteen facilities.
Campus placement is remarkable with about 75% of the passed-out students of AY 2021-22 getting placed with good packages. National level survey by AMCAT revealed best performance by our students among all TEQIP funded institutions in India.
The School receives significant material and moral support from its strong and active Alumni Association. The students have done exceedingly well in national level examinations with 16 having cleared UPSC examinations in various cadres. Our alumni are holding positions of eminence in many public, private and multi-national companies. Many are pursuing higher studies in India and abroad. Some of them are successful entrepreneurs and employers.
Admission to all the UG programs is carried out through an all-India common entrance test (CAT) conducted by CUSAT and the selection of faculty members is also done by CUSAT on all-India basis whereby there is a cosmopolitan atmosphere in the entire university campus with students and faculty representation from all over India and abroad. All this and many more stand testimony to the university’s philosophy of embodying a national character with international pursuit and the institution’s vision to become an engineering institution of international standing.
